Per New York State Public Health Law, residential health care facilities are required to increase awareness among both residents and families as to the availability of compliance information maintained by the Department of Health. Included in this information are directions on how to look up complaints, citations, inspections, enforcement actions, and penalties taken against the facility. The web address for the NYS Nursing Home Profiles website maintained by the Department of Health, and the web address for the Nursing Home Care Compare website maintained by the US Department of Health and Human Services.

Additional Public Health Law requires posting the maximum rates to be charged for residency and services on a publicly accessible website, detailing rates for each non-governmental payer source, publicly listing all owners, names and business address of any landlord, and providing a summary of contracts for provision of goods or services for which facility pays with any portion of Medicaid or Medicare funds.

According to CMS, their Care Compare site is meant to to be a single place to start finding any types of care you need. For people with Medicare or their caregivers who want to choose a Medicare provider (like physicians, hospitals, nursing homes, and others), this tool provides a single source search and compare experience, that lets you: Find information about providers and facilities based on your individual needs, Get helpful resources to choose your health care providers, and Make more informed decisions about where you get your health care.

The information there should be used with other information you gather about providers and facilities in your area. In addition to reviewing the information there, you should talk to your doctor, social worker, or other health care providers when choosing a provider. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), the federal agency that runs the Medicare program, created the tool in collaboration with organizations representing people with Medicare, hospice organizations, other stakeholders, and other federal agencies. Although the tool was created for people with Medicare in mind, many of the measures shown there apply to people who may not have Medicare.

Information on the site isn’t an endorsement or advertisement for any provider type. If information for a provider or facility isn’t provided there, it doesn’t mean they provide low quality of care or are non-compliant with the Medicare program. It may mean that CMS doesn’t have data for that specific provider or provider type. The web address is: https://www.medicare.gov/

According to the New York State Department of Health, nursing home quality measures give an indication of how well a nursing home provides care for its residents. Nursing Home Profiles display a set of quality measures that highlight ways in which nursing homes differ from one another. Exploring these quality measures is a starting point for your investigation into what nursing home is right for you or a loved one. It is not the final word. There are genuine differences in the specialties, expertise, and experience available at various nursing homes. For these reasons, you are encouraged to use the information available there to begin conversations with nursing home representatives and other health care professionals, as well as with family members, friends, and associates who may have direct experience with a nursing home. It is a good idea to visit any nursing home you are considering, to get a direct impression of the physical and social environment, how well the residents are treated, the professionalism of the staff, important rules and policies, and so on.
